Initiative, Social Media Stunt Spark Job Offer

When the Philadelphia 76ers announced plans for fan voting in a contest to name a mascot for the team, they thought they had the bases covered in a pretty typical approach to interaction between a sports team and is fan base.

Alumnus Jerry Rizzo ('11 Adv/PR) helped them fine tune things a bit.

Among the options for the fan vote were Phil E. Moose and B. Franklin Dogg. It was Rizzo, not the team, who took the initiative and created Twitter accounts for the prospective mascots. He started tweeting to drive votes for each of them.

While team officials appreciated the publicity the accounts brought to the process, they also wanted control of things themselves.

So, after Rizzo and a friend had driven hundreds of people to follow the prospective mascots, team officials offered to exchange information about the sites for some season tickets.

Rizzo accepted the offer -- but team owner Adam Aron had more in mind. He contacted Rizzo and offered a full-time job as the team's social media coordinator. As the Sixers prepare for the NBA season that opens for them on Dec. 26, Rizzo has been working to drive even more attention and interest about the team.
