Internship Program Sets Record for Fall

Thanks to the strong support of employers from around the region and country—and to the equally strong dedication and skill sets of our students—the number of for-credit internships completed during the fall semester in the College of Communications has reached a record level.

The 161 students completing internships eclipses the previous record of 149, set last fall.

A committed, full-time staff of three drives the thriving operation in the Office of Internships and Career Services in the College of Communications. Under the direction of Assistant Dean Bob Martin, the number of internships has increased steadily the past 12 years. In 1999-2000, 275 students completed for-credit internships. During the most recent academic year, 2009-2010, the number surged to 659.

Internship sites range from on-campus locations at Penn State to professional settings in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and many, many more. With a database of thousands of internship sites, students can select locations that interest them and then work closely with Martin, Colette Rodger and Stephanie Girouard to find an opportunity that matches their interest.

Overall, the emphasis on internships represents an integral part of a well-rounded approach to success stressed by the College of Communications.
